History

University of Miami is a prestigious private research university established in 1925 with an intent to offer "unique opportunities to develop inter-American studies, to further creative work in the arts and letters, and to conduct teaching and research programs in tropical studies." During World War II, the University of Miami was one of 131 colleges and universities nationally that took part in the V-12 Navy College Training Program, which offered students a path to a Navy commission. Its main campus spans across 260 acres in Coral Gables 160 acres of which were given by George E. Merrick, the founder of Coral Gables who also donated nearly $5 million (more than $67.2 million if adjusted for current inflation). The campus is located immediately south of the city of Miami and houses seven schools and two colleges including the University of Miami School of Law.
